Old Ship Of Zion

12/14/2007

I was standing by the banks of a river
Looking out over lifes troubled seas
When I saw an old ship that was sailing
Is that the old ship of Zion I see

It's hull was bent and battered
From the storms of life I could see
Waves were rough but that old ship kept sailing
Is that the old ship of Zion I see

At the stern of the ship was the captain
I could hear as he called out my name
Get on board It's the old ship of Zion
It will never pass this way again

As I step on board I'll be leaving
All my troubles and trials behind
I'll be safe with Jesus the captain
Sailing out on the old ship of Zion

Have had the words to old ship of zion, for awhile. Only have heard it a couple of times with music. But where can the music notes be found,as it is an old song. I can,t find it in song books or by sheet music, which is no longer in print.
Thanks , as it is a beautiful old song, usually sung alcapella. Patsy

WONDERFUL!!! I've only heard it sung acapella-style, though (relish hearing the bass)

I have a CD of the Kingsmen and they sing Ship of Zion very well. I also found a video of them on youtube singing this song. I love it.

This song is mentioned on the tombstone of Rev. JT Arrington (1858-1881), old burying ground in Beaufort NC. It says that in death he "began singing the Old Ship of Zion ... and crossed the river to join the singers on the other side."
