Once in a manger lowly hundreds of years ago
A little babe so holy came to this world below.
Near was a crowded city, Bethlehem dark and low
Here Joseph sought for pity, chill was the night and cold.
Angels sang out the sweet story, fear not for lo this morn
Jesus the Christ of Glory, a little babe is born.
Joseph and Mary weary, no one would take them in
Slept in a stable dreary, nigh to a crowded inn.
Out on the hillside frightened shepherds beheld the sight
For all the sky was lighted on that first Christmas night.

Far from the east three strangers, led by a star, their way
Kept safely from great danger seeking the Christ they say.

I was so glad to find this song. My grandmother use to sing this to my mother at Christmas and she(my mother) indicated she has never heard anyone else sing it. My mother is 85 so this song is obviously very old. If you know the author and the original date of the song would love to see that posted.
I have an old faded copy and it indicates the composer to be T.B. Weaver and the title is 'The Bethlehem Babe'. I am looking for the sheet music because mine is very hard to read.

I am 76 . We learned this song from our older brothers and sisters.They learned it from the school they went to many many years ago. I am suprised to see it printed here. It is just like we learned it. I could sing it to you and you could write the music .
my mother and father sang this song every christmas as a duet and later me and my sisters sang it as a trio. i'm; now 72 years old I ran across and old piece of music and my mother wrote that she got the song from her mother-in law it is very old
My grandmother, too, sang this song to my father, back round 1915 to 1920. I have some of the words and the melody line that dad had written down from memory, but I had lost the 3rd verse. Thanks for posting. It's a shame songs like this become lost.
